South Africa intends to revive a modular nuclear reactor program and increase its reliance on gas to generate electricity, according to a new energy-policy blueprint.
A revised Integrated Resource Plan envisions 2.23 trillion rand being invested in energy infrastructure by 2042, with nuclear and gas accounting for 16% of total generation capacity.
The plan aims to ensure energy security and achieve net-zero electricity generation by 2050, with dependence on coal dropping to 27% in the next 14 years, from 58% currently.
